Powerful Protection, Less Harsh: Why Peaceful Sleep Is the Smarter DEET Choice

We discovered Peaceful Sleep whilst on safari in South Africa; it’s the number one choice amongst Safari rangers and it’s clear to see why. We found it to be highly effective against bites from mosquitoes and other biting insects, and it’s a bonus that it is not unpleasant to use like a lot of insect repellents.  The clear spray is clean and non-greasy, so it doesn’t clog pores and leave a sticky residue.  The stick is ideal for targeting specific areas, such as the face, neck and ears.

Peaceful Sleep contains 15% DEET and one of the questions we’re often asked is whether this is a high enough percentage to make the product effective.  The answer is YES, absolutely!  

• There are other DEET products on the market that have a higher concentration of DEET but this doesn’t necessarily make them better because higher concentrations don't significantly increase effectiveness, but instead lengthen the duration of protection. Concentrations over 50% offer minimal extra benefit, while lower percentages (like 10-30%) provide good protection and are recommended for most situations, especially for children, as higher amounts can increase skin absorption and potential toxicity. 

How DEET Concentration Works:

Duration, Not Intensity: The percentage of DEET dictates how long it lasts, not how well it repels bugs beyond a certain point.

Max Effectiveness: Protection doesn't improve much above 30-50% DEET.

Example: 30% DEET might last 5-8 hours, while 100% might only last an extra hour or two, but it's more concentrated on the skin. 

Recommendations for Use:
For General Use: 10% to 30% DEET offers effective protection for several hours and is sufficient for most activities.

For Extended Exposure: If you'll be outdoors for very long periods, a 30% concentration allows for less frequent reapplication than a lower percentage.

For Kids: Use the lowest effective concentration (10-30%) and always follow label directions; avoid applying to children's hands.
